Slovakia defender Martin Skrtel should be fit for the World Cup finals despite being taken to hospital with an ankle injury.

Skrtel suffered the injury in the 16th minute of a World Cup warm-up game against Costa Rica on Saturday and was substituted immediately.

It was only the central defender's second appearance since suffering a broken metatarsal in Liverpool's Europa League win at Unirea Urziceni in February.

But there was good news after Skrtel underwent a scan which suggested the player only had swelling to his ankle rather than any serious damage and he is expected to be fit for the finals.

"It is not too bad, it is just a gash,'' Skrtel told the Slovakian Football Association's website. "I think that in a few days it will be okay.''

And Skrtel was also encouraged by his team-mates' efforts as they brushed Costa Rica aside.

"I saw the second half,'' he added. "I think we will have delighted the fans. We wanted to win this match to put ourselves in a good place before the World Cup. We managed that. Perhaps the only negative is my injury, because to go off after quarter of an hour is not nice.''
