Ruud van Nistelrooy believes his international career has come to an end after he failed to secure a place in Netherlands' World Cup squad.
Van Nistelrooy had hoped that a January move to Hamburg would help his chances of making Bert van Marwijk's squad for the finals in South Africa, but despite scoring five goals in 11 Bundesliga games, his name was absent from the provisional squad of 30 announced on Tuesday.
Van Nistelrooy, who retired from international football following Euro 2008, expected to miss the tournament following discussions with Van Marwijk and, at 33, does not expect to feature again for his country.
"Of course I am greatly disappointed,'' Van Nistelrooy told NOS Studio Sport. "I do feel that I could have helped the team. But now that my World Cup dream has been shattered, I think that my international career is over. I will be 34 in July.
"We have had regular contact recently and it became quite clear over the last fortnight that the chances of me playing at the World Cup were rather small. I am now going to go on holiday and relax to be fit to give it my all again for Hamburg next season."
Van Nistelrooy has scored 33 goals in 64 internatinoal appearances for Netherlands.
