The Reds won their Carling Cup tie at the Championship club 2-0 but appealed to the FA after Foy wrongly identified Fabio as the perpetrator of a foul.
The FA confirmed the booking will be removed from Fabio's record and applied to Rafael insstead.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "I had no idea. It was the players who picked up on it. I think it's right to appeal the decision. If we get to January and Fabio reaches five bookings [and receives a subsequent suspension] because of this incident then we'd feel a bit aggrieved."
