Cruz Azul advances to CONCACAF quarters

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Pablo Zeballos and Alejandro Vela scored in the first half Wednesday night, leading Cruz Azul of Mexico to a 2-0 victory over the Columbus Crew in a CONCACAF Champions League match.

With the win, Cruz Azul became the first team to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals. The Group C leaders have 10 points, four ahead of second-place Columbus and six in front of Saprissa of Costa Rica with two matches remaining.

The Crew's home winning streak was halted at 24 games. Columbus has won an MLS-record 21 home matches.

The Crew, who lost 5-0 to Cruz Azul in Mexico four weeks ago, can secure a berth in the knockout round with a win over Saprissa on Sept. 29.
