Hart appointed Canada's interim coach

TORONTO -- Stephen Hart has been appointed coach of Canada's soccer team for the rest of the year.

Hart is the Canadian Soccer Association's technical director. He was made interim coach Friday and temporarily replaces Dale Mitchell, who was fired last month. Under Mitchell, the team failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Canada finished last in its regional semifinal group.

Hart will coach Canada at this summer's 12-team Gold Cup. He was the interim coach two years ago, leading Canada to the semifinals in that tournament.

Canada plays a May 30 exhibition against Cyprus and opens the Gold Cup against Jamaica on July 3 in Los Angeles. Canada then faces El Salvador on July 7 in Columbus, Ohio, and Costa Rica on July 10 in Miami.
