Gers boss denies Toon Ferguson offer

Rangers manager Walter Smith has denied claims from Newcastle United boss Joe Kinnear that the Magpies have made a transfer enquiry regarding Barry Ferguson.

The Ibrox supremo was responding to comments made over the weekend when Kinnear is reported as saying "I have enquired about Ferguson" and Smith was quick to scold Newcastle for using his skipper's name in such a manner.

"It's strange, I must say," said Smith. "If the comments are accurate, he claims he has been in contact with Rangers. As far as the chairman, the chief executive and myself are concerned, there has been no contact from Newcastle or any other club.

"That part of it is a little bit disappointing - that he would say that when it has not been the case. I don't know if he has done that to pacify his own support because I can't think of a reason why he'd say that and that is the disappointing thing.

"But Barry is an experienced player and won't get that upset about it."

Newcastle are though to be willing to spend around 4 million on Ferguson, who is contracted to Rangers until 2010, and the Scotland international might be eager to prove himself in the Premier League after a largely disappointing two year stint with Blackburn Rovers.

The 30-year-old returned to Rangers in 2005 to successfully rebuild a reputation that had been tarnished during his time at Ewood Park.
