Rapid Vienna clinch 32nd league title

VIENNA, April 20 (Reuters) - Rapid Vienna clinched the Austrian league title with a round to spare on Sunday thanks to a comfortable 3-0 win over eighth-placed Altach.

Rapid lived up to their name, scoring twice in the opening 10 minutes before Austrian international Erwin Hoffer put the result beyond doubt with a solo effort on the half-hour mark.

Rapid's 32nd league title came at the expense of heavy pre-season favourites Salzburg who made sure of second place with a 2-0 win over Rapid's cross-town rivals Austria Vienna.

Salzburg, trained by future Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni, saw their title hopes effectively dashed last month when they suffered a 7-0 home defeat by Rapid.

Rapid have earned a place in next season's Champions League qualifying competition while Salzburg and third-placed Austria Vienna will go into the opening UEFA Cup qualifying round.
