Australia reveal squad for World Cup qualifier

Australia coach Pim Verbeek has named 39 players in his preliminary squad for their World Cup qualifier against Qatar on February 6 - but there is no place for Newcastle striker Mark Viduka.

The Dutchman named 20 players from the domestic A-League for the game in Melbourne.

Magpies forward Viduka is thought to be considering international retirement but has yet to make a final decision.

And, with the Magpies due to play in the Premier League just two days before the Qatar game, he was not included in the squad.

However, Liverpool winger Harry Kewell, Everton's Tim Cahill and West Ham's Lucas Neill were among eight English-based players selected by Verbeek for Australia's first World Cup game since they joined the Asian Football Confederation two years ago.

'I have deliberately kept the squad big to give us maximum flexibility until match day,' said Verbeek.

'I have been very pleased with the way the local players have responded to what we're trying to do in the recent training camps we've had.

'I want to give them every opportunity to state their claim to be part of the final 18-man squad which must be named on match day.'

Preliminary squad: John Aloisi (Central Coast Mariners), Michael Beauchamp (Nurnberg), Mark Bresciano (Palermo), Mark Bridge (Newcastle Jets), Alex Brosque (Sydney FC), Jacob Burns (Wisla Krakow), Tim Cahill (Everton), Nick Carle (Bristol City), David Carney (Sheffield United), Simon Colosimo (Perth Glory)
