Ligue 1: Valenciennes see off St. Etienne

PARIS, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Valenciennes climbed two places to fourth in Ligue 1 with a 2-0 home win over St Etienne on Saturday.

The northerners, in their second season back after more than a decade outside the top flight, took the points courtesy of an early header from midfielder Geoffrey Doumeng and a late close-range effort by forward Gregory Pujol.

Valenciennes, a team with a small budget, are seven points behind leaders Olympique Lyon who entertain Toulouse later on Saturday.

St Etienne, who have won a record 10 French titles, dropped one place to 11th.
