Preki signs new multiyear deal as Chivas USA coach

CARSON, Calif. -- Preki signed a new multiyear deal as coach of Chivas USA on Friday.

The 44-year-old MLS coach of the year led the team to a 15-7-8 record and the Western Conference title last season, his first as a head coach on the pro level.

In December, the New York Red Bulls were reportedly denied permission to speak to Preki about their vacant coaching job.

"We are pleased to secure Preki's leadership ahead of this important era for Chivas USA," team president and CEO Shawn Hunter said.

Preki became Chivas USA's fourth coach a year ago after serving as an assistant to Bob Bradley. Preki, a two-time MLS MVP, also played in England's Premier League.

Chivas USA opens its season March 30 at FC Dallas.
