WASHINGTON -- D.C. United on Thursday completed the transfer of goalkeeper Troy Perkins to Valerenga of the Norwegian first division.
United and Valerenga agreed to the transfer last month. In anticipation of the deal, United acquired a new starting goalkeeper, Zach Wells, in a trade with Houston on Dec. 12.
Perkins spent his four MLS seasons with United and was the club's No. 1 goalkeeper for the last two. He started 77 games and finished with a record of 36-19-22 and a goals-against average of 1.22. He was the league's goalkeeper of the year in 2006 and led MLS in wins in 2007.
United also announced that defender Devon McTavish had surgery to repair a hernia. He is expected to need two to three weeks to recover, and the team expects him to be ready for preseason training.
Also Thursday, team president Kevin Payne underwent quadruple bypass surgery at a Virginia hospital. Payne, who had a mild stroke in October, is expected to return to full-time duties with the club in February.
