FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New Englander Kristine Lilly and scoring leader Abby Wambach were among 18 players chosen for the U.S. women's roster that will face Mexico on April 14 at Gillette Stadium.
The U.S. team begins its domestic schedule of eight games leading to September's World Cup in China after winning the prestigious Algarve Cup in Portugal.
Lilly, from Wilton, Conn., has a world-record 323 international appearances and is on track for a fifth Women's World Cup.
Wambach will join Lilly among the forwards on the team. Wambach has 68 career goals in just 88 games.
Carli Lloyd, who led the Americans at the Algarve Cup last month with four goals -- one in each game -- to earn tournament MVP honors, is one of the five midfielders on the roster. So is Shannon Boxx, who returned from knee surgery last month.
Under coach Greg Ryan, the U.S. women recently moved up to the top ranking in the world.
