Hartlepool face probe after pitch invasion

The Football Association are investigating an incident in which two Hartlepool supporters were allowed onto the pitch to confront Macclesfield goalkeeper Tommy Lee.

The incident took place at Hartlepool's Victoria Park ground on Tuesday night after a late own goal by Macclesfield defender David Morley gave the club a 3-2 win.

An FA spokesman said: 'The referee mentioned in his report an incident concerning supporters entering the field of play and confronting a Macclesfield player.

'We have written to Hartlepool to ask for an explanation and they have seven days to respond. We have also contacted the local police and will be trying to ascertain how the situation was dealt with and what the club will be doing to prevent such an incident taking place in the future.'

In a similar case in October 2002, Birmingham were charged with failing to control their fans during a Premiership derby against Aston Villa at St Andrews.
