Rapinoe, star for Portland and U.S., out with ACL tear

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Megan Rapinoe, the University of Portland and U.S. women's soccer team forward, will miss the rest of the college season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee, the school said Monday.

Rapinoe suffered the injury during the first half of Portland's 2-1 victory over Washington State on Thursday. Surgery has been scheduled for Wednesday, according to a news release from the university.

Rapinoe, who helped Portland win the national championship as a freshman last season, had 10 goals in 11 matches this season.

For the national team, Rapinoe had two goals when the United States beat Taiwan on Oct. 1. She had been named to the roster for Sunday's match with Iceland before getting hurt.

The Pilots (11-2-1) host San Francisco on Friday.
