Bayern end St Pauli dream in German Cup
HAMBURG, Germany, April 12 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich reached
the final of the German Cup with a 3-0 win away to giant-killers
St Pauli on Wednesday.
Owen Hargreaves surprised the keeper with a shot that
squeezed in from 30 metres in the 15th minute and Claudio
Pizarro scored twice in the last six minutes to seal a highly
professional win over the third division side.
Bayern go through to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the final
at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on April 29.
The Bavarians are four points clear in the Bundesliga and
Wednesday's victory over St Pauli keeps them on track for a 13th
Cup win and a second successive domestic double.
'It was really hard work,' said Bayern coach Felix Magath.
'St Pauli are as strong as the professional teams and they
fought for the whole 90 minutes.'
St Pauli are a favourite club of neutrals in Germany and
across the world, famous for a brown strip and a fan base made
up of punks and political radicals.
A full house of 19,400 crammed into the Millerntor stadium
just round the corner from the Reeperbahn, capital of the city's
sex industry, in the hope of seeing another upset.
St Pauli beat Hertha Berlin and Werder Bremen on their way
to the semi-finals and the fans, many waving the pirate 'Jolly
Roger' flag that is the club's symbol, had reason for confidence
when Bayern made a nervous start.
With the pitch in a terrible condition, the visitors saw
early passes go astray before Hargreaves gave them the lead with
his well struck shot from nowhere.
St Pauli had one decent chance in the first half when Michel
Mazingu finished off a sweeping move with a volley that Oliver
Kahn saved comfortably enough.
They came even closer to an equaliser 10 minutes after the
break when Kahn pulled off a brilliant save at full stretch to
keep out a Felix Luz header.
There were several more nervous moments for Bayern from set
pieces before Pizarro gratefully tapped in after the ball had
fallen at his feet from a Hargreaves corner.
Pizarro completed the win with a finish from a tight angle
two minutes from time.
