Menotti turns down Veracruz offer

MEXICO CITY, Feb 22 (Reuters) - Veteran Argentine coach Cesar Luis Menotti has turned down the offer to take charge of struggling Veracruz, a director of the Mexican club said.

Menotti, the chain-smoking coach who steered Argentina to victory in the 1978 World Cup, had provisionally accepted the club's offer last week.

'Menotti asked us for a period to resolve some personal matters. The deadline is now up and his answer was negative,' said Veracruz vice-president Guillermo Mendizabal.

Menotti, 67, is a former coach of Mexico's national team.

Coach Alfredo Tena resigned from the Veracruz job 10 days ago after they started Mexico's 2006 Clausura championship by losing five games in a row. Veracruz took their first points when they beat Atlante 1-0 on Saturday.
