Berlin to host World Cup opening party after all

BERLIN -- The World Cup will get an opening party after all.

Tournament organizers last week canceled a gala at Munich's Olympic Stadium, citing the risk of damage to the field.

Berlin, however, will hold celebrations near the city's landmark Brandenburg Gate on June 7, two days before the soccer showcase's opening game in Munich, Mayor Klaus Wowereit said Tuesday. Details and funding are still to be worked out.

Initial plans for the Munich gala included an opening ceremony featuring Peter Gabriel and soprano Jessye Norman.
