Nice midfielder Kevin Anin has been place in an artificial coma after suffering arm and spinal injuries in a car crash, according to French news outlet L'Equipe.

The 26-year-old was injured when a car he was travelling in left the A28 motorway around 60 kilometres north-east of Rouen in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Unconfirmed reports claim that the driver of the vehicle had fallen asleep behind the wheel.

Anin was rushed to hospital, along with three other crash victims, where it was claimed he was put into an induced coma.

"In the light of the information currently in our possession, the situation seems quite serious. We are worried," Nice chief executive Julien Fournier said in quotes reported by L'Equipe.

"I am in touch with the family of Kevin and I look forward to the medical verdict.

"[We] should have information in the next few hours."

Anin joined Nice from Sochaux last year but struggled to make an impact at the club, making just 13 league appearances last season.

The news of the accident has been met with a wave of support as a number of French players and clubs took to social media to offer their hopes of a speedy recovery.
