Rummenigge: We can win World Cup

Stephan Uersfeld, Germany Correspondent

The all-German Champions League final has added to the sense that the national team can lift the World Cup in Brazil next year, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has said.

• Bierhoff could quit after World Cup

The Bayern Munich chief executive, who saw his side beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in a high-quality Wembley final, said it was time for Germany's international players to replicate the successes being enjoyed by the country's club game.

The last time Germany won the World Cup, in 1990, the likes of Lothar Matthaus and Rudi Voller were in the team, with Franz Beckenbauer as coach.

"If Dortmund and Bayern can make it to the Champions League final with loads of Germany internationals, then this is the proof that the title is possible now for the Germany team," Rummenigge told Bild.

"This generation has to eye the World Cup title as their big goal next year. Understatement makes no sense. Germany wants to finally win a title after 18 years [their last was Euro '96]."

Joachim Low's Germany side contains several Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund stars, most of whom will not play when Germany face the USA in a friendly on Sunday.

That game will be something of a sideshow as the domestic season comes to an end with the DFB-Pokal final in Berlin on Saturday, when Bayern Munich could become the first German team to win the Treble of Bundesliga, Champions League and DFB-Pokal.
