McManaman in line for Under-21 call-up

Richard Jolly

Wigan Athletic winger Callum McManaman is in contention for a shock call-up to the England Under-21 squad for this summer's European Championship in Israel.

The 22-year-old had not started a Premier League game before March but could force his way into Stuart Pearce's side for the June tournament.

Under-21s boss Pearce and Everton captain Phil Neville, a member of the coaching staff, were at the DW Stadium to watch McManaman in Tuesday's 3-2 defeat to Swansea.

Both left soon after the youngster was substituted in a loss that leaves Wigan on the brink of relegation to the Championship.

McManaman has scored two goals in Wigan's last three league games and found the back of the net at Wembley in their FA Cup semi-final win over Millwall last month.

However, his only international experience came in the 2011 Under-20 World Cup, when he was chosen after more than 30 players withdrew from the squad.

Wilfried Zaha, Raheem Sterling, Thomas Ince and Andros Townsend are among the wingers Pearce has picked in the last year, but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is eligible to play for the Under-21s, is likely to be called up for the England senior squad this summer instead.
