Boyce praises Kone form

Richard Jolly

Emmerson Boyce feels his Wigan Athletic team-mate Arouna Kone is giving the club a much-needed cutting edge in their battle to stay up.

• Blog: Kone does it again

The Ivory Coast international is on course to become Wigan's most prolific Premier League marksman ever after he scored a late winner for the second successive match as his side beat Norwich 1-0 on Saturday to move out of the relegation zone.

It was the striker's sixth goal in as many games in all competitions and took Kone, a 4 million summer signing from Levante, to ten Premier League goals this season.

No Wigan player has reached double figures in a league campaign since Hugo Rodallega in 2009-10, and only Henri Camara, with 12 goals in 2005-06, has ever scored more in a top-flight campaign for the Latics.

"Arouna's goals are making a huge difference," Boyce said. "And when you're in this sort of situation what you need most is someone who can score crucial goals, and we've got that in Arouna.

"Getting into double figures in this league is no mean feat. He's come into great form at the right time of the season, just when we needed him to. He's our strike weapon, and he's on fire at the moment."
