Klopp responds to media criticism

Borussia Dortmund manager Jurgen Klopp has hit out at the German media following a recent article highly critical of the club.

• Lewandowski wants goals

With the Bundesliga side preparing for Tuesday's Champions League last 16 second leg against Shakhtar Donetsk, German press agency DPA claimed on Monday that only qualification into the next round could rescue Dortmund's season, following their failure to defend their domestic titles this term.

Despite sitting second in the Bundesliga, leaders Bayern Munich are running away with the league, while Dortmund also came under fire for their recent DFB-Pokal exit at the hands of Bayern.

"I have read that if we were to be eliminated this is a lost season for us," Klopp said. "That's awful. You should be more disciplined. When I read stuff like that or that this game is being hyped as us playing to redeem our honour - I am just not intelligent enough to understand it."

Dortmund will be aiming to reach their first Champions League quarter-finals since 1998 on Tuesday after a 15-year exodus.

"Let's put the cards on the table - and go," Klopp said. "It's the game of the year for us. We have never been in this situation before. But everything we have experienced for the first time so far was particularly beautiful. That's why we want to make this game special, if possible with a positive result."

Klopp will have the majority of his squad to choose from, with only Mats Hummels still a doubt following the flu he picked up last week. The Germany international told kicker he felt "weak" and that his condition had not really improved.

On Monday, Hummels was sent home from team training to rest, but Klopp has not completely ruled out his defender for Tuesday night.
