No new deal for Girard

ESPN staff

Montpellier president Louis Nicollin has confirmed that coach Rene Girard will not be offered a new deal at the end of the season.

Girard, who last season became the first coach to lead Montpellier to the Ligue 1 title, had recently said he had made up his mind over his future but would not divulge his plans. Nicollin responded by saying he was "not going to cry" if he had decided to leave.

Nicollin, despite not having a successor in mind, has announced that he will not offer Girard the chance to stay beyond the end of his current deal.

"Overall I am happy with the work he has done and I thought at one point that we would give him a one-year contract extension, but no-one dictates to me what to do," he told L'Equipe. "It's me that pays the money and it's me that decides, so we will end it there."

Montpellier are currently sixth in the table, ten points off the top, after Saturday's 2-0 win over Rennes.
