A-League's Heart boosted by Dutch import

By Sam Lienert

Melbourne Heart have added Dutch midfielder Marcel Meeuwis to bolster their A-League squad after losing several key players.

The 32-year-old arrived in Melbourne on Tuesday and trained with the fifth-placed Heart, who he will represent for the rest of this season.

But he still needs an international clearance to play in Friday night's pivotal clash with seventh-placed Newcastle.

The defensive midfielder's previous clubs include Dutch powerhouse Feyenoord and the German Bundesliga's Borussia Monchengladbach.

"With the combined losses of Vince Grella (retired), Aziz Behich and Michael Marrone (overseas transfers) we needed to add depth and quality to the squad," Heart football operations manager John Didulica said.

"In Marcel we have certainly done that.

"Marcel's pedigree will ensure we are well served across midfield and the options we have available across the line-up are multiplied.

"Marcel will add significant tactical knowledge to the squad and bring significant industry and energy."
