AEK Athens defender fails drug test

AEK Athens have confirmed that defender Christos Arkoudas has tested positive for banned stimulant oxilofrine.

The 22-year-old failed a routine test after the 2-1 home win over OFI Crete on January 26, a club spokesman told Reuters.

The club, currently 12th in the 16-team Greek Super League, have received a letter from the Greek anti-doping control body (ESKAN) confirming the failed test.

Arkoudas is expected to appeal the decision and be re-tested, a process likely to happen next week.

The right-back faces a ban of up to two years if the second test is also positive, according to the Greek federation's disciplinary code.
