Spurs not committed to Phoenix game

English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur hasn't committed to a game against the Wellington Phoenix, saying it is "considering a number of options" for its off-season.

The prospect of a July fixture between the powerful London side and the Wellington-based A-League club arose on Monday via social media.

Westpac Stadium chief executive David Gray also confirmed Spurs officials had made an initial approach about playing in New Zealand.

However, Phoenix general manager David Dome said such a game was still some distance from being organised and that talks were being held with more than one English side.

A Tottenham Hotspur statement to NZ Newswire said the club was still to finalise its schedule although it had committed to an off-season trip.

"We are considering a number of options for both our post and pre-season tour program this summer," a Spurs spokesman said.

"At this stage, our only overseas commitment is to play in the Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong in July."

That biennial four-team tournament will also feature Premier League rivals Manchester City and Sunderland, along with the South China football club. Matches will be played from July 24-27.
