Heynckes to hold talks on Bayern future

Stephan Uersfeld, Germany Correspondent

Bayern Munich will make a decision about the future of coach Jupp Heynckes this month, kicker has reported.

Heynckes, 67, is under contract at Bayern until the end of the season, and had previously said he would not make a decision about his future until March.

But with the resumption of the Bundesliga after its winter break imminent, kicker has said Bayern - the league leaders - want to resolve the issue sooner.

According to the paper, Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is to invite his coach to talks before the end of the month.

If Heynckes decides to bring down the curtain on his coaching career, Bayern have lined up three possible candidates, kicker reports, with ex-Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo and Bayern reserve coach Mehmet Scholl reported to have joined Pep Guardiola in the race.

TZ has reported that Guardiola's agent, Josep Maria Orobitg, had been spotted in Munich.

Scholl may be the outsider for the job after he clashed with Rummenigge during the European Championship last summer. The former German internation working as a pundit for ARD, had criticised Bayern forward Mario Gomez. and said after Germany's opening game against Portugal: "At times, I feared he would get bed sores."

Bayern's sporting director, Matthias Sammer, played down the incident though and said: "I think Mehmet Scholl's criticism is overdrawn and unnecessary."
