Meireles banned for four matches

ESPN staff

Fenerbahce has successfully appealed Raul Meireles's 11-match ban, with the midfielder now facing just four matches on the sidelines.

The Turkish Football Federation [TFF] handed Meireles the significant suspension for allegedly spitting at the referee during Fenerbahce's derby loss to Galatasaray.

But the 29-year-old had his sentence downgraded after the TFF ruled it was "physically impossible" for Meireles to have deliberately spat at Halis Ozkahya given that he was speaking throughout the incident.

Meireles was absent for Fenerbahce's 3-1 defeat to Karabukspor on the weekend and will return for the trip to Mersin Idmanyurdu on February 10 after receiving a four-game ban for his verbal protests towards Ozkahya.
