McCarthy set for spell on sidelines

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has confirmed that midfielder James McCarthy suffered ankle ligament damage during Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Norwich.

• McCarthy tipped to reach the top

McCarthy, 22, was the victim of an off-the-ball challenge by Norwich midfielder Bradley Johnson in the early stages at Carrow Road. Despite being able to continue after lengthy treatment, he was eventually forced off at half-time.

And Martinez is now facing an anxious wait to discover how long the Republic of Ireland international will be out of action for.

"It is his ankle ligaments," Martinez told the Wigan Evening Post. "We will X-ray it and get the results from the scans very shortly. But I doubt if he will be available for the next 10 days.

"James has been in good form, and they took him out of the game, which is very disappointing."

Centre back Adrian Lopez is also a major doubt for Saturday's home game against Arsenal after he appeared to pull a hamstring in the closing stages at Norwich.

Lopez, 24, had to continue despite the injury, as Wigan had already made all three permitted substitutions. He was carried off on a stretcher after the final whistle and will be assessed this week.
