Cuellar: United attack is ultimate test

Kristan Heneage

Sunderland defender Carlos Cuellar believes his side's visit to Old Trafford to face Manchester United will provide the ultimate test of their defensive abilities.

Cuellar, 31, joined the club on a free transfer from Aston Villa in the summer and believes that Saturday will see the Black Cats face the league's two best strikers in Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.

"You have to say Rooney and Van Persie are the best strikers in the Premier League at the moment," he told the Sunderland Echo. "They showed that against Man City. They don't need to play good football, they can score on just one counter-attack because their quality is unbelievable. It will be tough on Saturday but it's one of the games everyone looks forward to playing.

"After getting the confidence boost of Tuesday, we have a chance in this game," added the 31-year-old. I think there was confidence here even when we were losing. Against Chelsea we lost because of a few mistakes, but the performance was still very good. You have to play without fear at Man United. You have to give them respect, but if we play like on Tuesday, we have a chance."

Meanwhile midfielder Jack Colback has revealed he believes Sunderland can still take something from Saturday's game - describing Tuesday's win over Reading as one of the best feelings in football.

"When you go to the top teams, people say you won't pick anything up, but we'll be going there looking to hurt them," said the midfielder. "We're a dangerous side to play. We showed that at Everton. We'll be going there with the belief we can get something. Then it's another big game against Southampton (next weekend) where we'll be looking to win.

"The mood's a lot better now. Most of us had forgotten what it feels like to win a game and it's one of the best feelings you can have in football. The fans go home happy and it's certainly something we want to keep doing."
