Paul Lambert believes he could have a future England international on his hands in the shape of Ashley Westwood.

The Aston Villa manager has been amazed by the impact the midfielder has made in the Premier League this season, just months after his 1 million summer transfer from League One Crewe Alexandra.

The manner in which Westwood has handled the huge step up in class has been such a revelation that Lambert believes he is Villa's answer to Paul Scholes.

The 22-year-old recently shared the club's November Player of the Month award for November with Christian Benteke and will take another step on a steep learning curve when he faces Steven Gerrard at Anfield on Saturday.

Lambert has no doubts the young talent has everything required to make an impact at the top of the game, after comparing him to Scholes, one of the best midfielders in the game over the last 20 years.

"The biggest compliment I can give is he is like a mini-Scholes at the moment. The way he is performing is that impressive," said Lambert.

"He has been outstanding for us and he has handled everything really well since coming into the side. He is a good footballer."
