Wigan hit by injuries

Richard Jolly

Wigan will be without captain Gary Caldwell for another fortnight because of a hamstring problem.

The Scotland defender incurred the injury in the 3-0 defeat to Newcastle, when he also collected the caution that forced him to miss Saturday's 2-2 draw with QPR through suspension.

"Caldwell is still in week one of a three-week recovery period," manager Roberto Martinez told the club's official website.

"He missed the game against Reading (on November 24) as he was carrying a bit of a hamstring problem and that was accentuated in the Newcastle game.

"It will be between two or three weeks but he has recovered well and in the last couple of days he has been progressing. He won't be ready for Norwich (on Saturday) but he won't be far away."

And it means Wigan still have defensive injury problems as they prepare for the trip to Norwich.

Antolin Alcaraz, who has been absent since August, is "10 days away" from making his comeback, according to Martinez and could be in contention to face Arsenal on December 22. And Ivan Ramis, who suffered a hamstring problem in November's 3-2 win over Reading, is rated at "50-50" for game at Carrow Road.

However, Maynor Figueroa is available again after serving a one-match ban against QPR, meaning that midfielder David Jones, who played as a central defender for the first time in his professional career on Saturday, is not likely to be needed at the back again.
