Brockie aims to strike hard at Wanderers

By Cathy Walshe

Memories of half-chances and missed opportunities have evaporated for Phoenix striker Jeremy Brockie as he looks to continue his rich vein of form against Western Sydney Wanderers in Wellington on Sunday.

After netting 18 times in pre-season play, the goals dried up for Brockie once the A-League started nine weeks ago.

But despite remaining goal-less for the first four weeks, the 25-year-old New Zealand international says he was always confident the drought would break.

"I was getting half opportunities, and maybe I was mistiming things - they were either going wide, people were getting in the way or the keeper was saving them," he told AAP.

"It was just about making sure I didn't get frustrated, and kept my belief that once the first one went in, they'd keep coming."

Brockie's patience finally paid off with a brace against Melbourne Victory in the Phoenix's fifth-round 3-2 loss, and he hasn't looked back since, racking up five goals in the past four games.

Wellington's past two results have been especially satisfying, with Brockie scoring twice in the Phoenix's 3-2 win over his old club Newcastle Jets and again in their 1-1 draw with Perth Glory last week.

The two away results broke a three-match losing streak that had the Phoenix anchored near the bottom of the A-League table, and Brockie said the focus is now on maintaining momentum with four of their next five games at home.

A win over the Wanderers at Westpac Stadium on Sunday is vital, given that the Sydneysiders are just one point and one place ahead of the seventh-placed Phoenix.

"They've had a pretty good start to the season," he said.

"They're defensively very strong, and they've got some big, tall, strong centre backs. Maybe if we can go down their flanks a little bit and exploit them there, that might be a way to get in and score a few goals."
