Doctor: Jovetic close to Fiorentina return

ESPN staff

Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic has not suffered a recurrence of the calf injury which sidelined him for three weeks and should be back for the side's next fixture, according to the club doctor Paolo Manetti.

Jovetic, 23, tore the soleus muscle in his calf after scoring in the Viola's 4-1 victory against Cagliari on November 4 and had to be replaced in the second half.

The Montenegro international was ruled out of Fiorentina's 3-1 win at AC Milan before earning a recall to the squad for the Atalanta game on Sunday - only to then be removed from the squad shortly before kick-off.

However, Manetti has reassured fans and manager Vincenzo Montella alike by claiming that the former FK Partizan player's omission was just a precautionary move, while he should be fully-fit to return for the Torino game on Sunday.

"Jovetic has completely recovered from the injury to his soleus muscle," Manetti told Corriere dello Sport.

"He actually suffered a muscular problem in his other leg in training on Saturday and we didn't want to risk him. For that reason, we will put him on a different training schedule for the first few days of this week.''

Jovetic's return will be a welcome one for Montella, with the striker having contributed six goals to Fiorentina's surprise title bid. The Tuscan side currently sit in third place, following Sunday's4-1 win over Atalanta.
