Barkley, 18, spent just over two months at Hillsborough, scoring four goals in 13 appearances.

Toffees manager David Moyes was keen for the England Under-21 international to gain first-team experience in the Championship, but has brought him back to Goodison Park after losing Phil Neville to injury.

Captain Neville, 35, will be out for up to two months after having knee surgery on Friday, leaving Moyes needing cover in midfield.

Barkley had initially joined Wednesday on a one-month loan, which was then extended on a week-by-week basis.

His final game for the Championship side was last Saturday, as they were beaten 1-0 at Nottingham Forest.

Barkley, who made his Everton debut against Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League at the start of last season, has made ten first-team appearances for Moyes' side.
