Frei, 33, who has played for the likes of Stade Rennes and Borussia Dortmund, is currently at Swiss champions FC Basel.
The striker became a father this summer and he has admitted his priorities in life have since shifted.
"I have come to realise there are more important things than winning or losing," he said.
"I will be able to look back on a wonderful career.
"I have a couple of bullets left. And up until the summer I want to use them all."
Frei scored 42 goals in 84 appearances for Switzerland before retiring from international football in 2011.
His club career has seen him hit 47 goals in 100 Ligue 1 matches, while in the Bundesliga he scored 34 in 74 matches.
