Ayew wants to end Bordeaux hoodoo

Fabien Perrin, France Correspondent

Andre Ayew hopes Marseille can end a winless run at Bordeaux that stretches back to 1977 when the teams meet in Ligue 1 on Sunday.

Ayew, whose team are second in the table, says Les Phocéens will need to be at their best to end their dismal record at the Stadium Chaban-Delmas.

The midfielder, who may play as striker because of injuries to André-Pierre Gignac and Loic Remy and his brother Jordan's suspension, said: "Every statistic exists to be removed, and we'll try to end this run.

"Even the European Champions of 1993 never won there. We want to be a part of history. It will be difficult, but we'll go to Bordeaux to win."

Although Marseille may be lacking personnel up front, Lucas Mendes says they have one of the finest defenders in the game in their back line.

He said 22-year-old Nicolas Nkoulou was "a great player who could reach Thiago Silva's best defender in the world level, or even be better than him."
