Hertha Berlin's former Brazilian striker Alex Alves, who once won Goal of the Year in 2000, has died after a long battle with leukaemia.
The Brazilian passed away at the Amaral de Carvalho hospital in Jau, Sao Paulo, after being diagnosed with the disease in 2007.
He only made news of his illness public in October.
Alves spent three years with Hertha, between 2000 and 2003, and is best remembered for his Goal of the Year effort against Cologne in 2000 when he scored from inside the centre circle.
He also found the net in a Champions League clash with Barcelona during a 3-1 defeat in the same year.
