Young Socceroos grab 1-0 win over Qatar
The Young Socceroos opened their Asian under-19 championship with a 1-0 victory over Qatar in Dubai.Holland-based Corey Gameiro scored the game's only goal after 11 minutes, when he accepted a clever through ball from Celtic's Jackson Irvine before driving home his strike past the Qatari goalkeeper Muhannad Naim.Australia had several first half chances to extend their lead but were unable to convert, while it was goalkeeper Paul Izzo of Adelaide United who was called upon to defuse several Qatari attacking raids in the second half of Sunday night's clash. In oppressive, humid conditions Germany-based midfielder Mustafa Amini suffered leg cramps late in the fixture, leaving the field after 60 minutes."The Qatar goalkeeper made a couple of outstanding saves that kept our lead to one goal at halftime," Young Socceroos coach Paul Okon said."In the second half Qatar was kicking long balls forward and it became a defensive battle that we handled very well."This was highlighted by the fact that they only had two possible scoring opportunities for the whole game."It was a tough game and it was hard to dominate the full 90 minutes."Australia next play Syria, who went top of group D with a 5-1 thrashing of Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday (Wednesday morning AEDT).
