Norwich played for bragging rights at Villa

Wes Hoolahan admitted Norwich's players were pushing for bragging rights when they faced former manager Paul Lambert at Aston Villa on Saturday.

Lambert's Villa were within 11 minutes of a thoroughly undeserved victory when the in-form winger whipped in a cross following a corner which was turned in by Michael Turner for the equaliser.

"It would have been galling if we had lost after the way we played," he said. "In the second half, we put a lot of pressure on, had a lot of chances and limited them to just one or two. At least he [Lambert] hasn't got one over on us. But you want to get one over on him.

"Some players move on, managers move on and some players stick with a club. I am confident Paul Lambert will turn it round at Villa.

"He's a great manager - we saw that over four years. He brought Norwich from League One to the Premier League. That speaks for itself. But he has a massive job here [at Villa] with a massive club, and the fans expect a lot."

Norwich's point maintained the improvement they showed in their victory over Arsenal and gave Chris Hughton a satisfactory return to the city in which he made such a favourable impact in the Championship with Villa's arch rivals.

Hoolahan is enjoying life at Carrow Road with Lambert's successor and believes Hughton is getting the best out of his players.

"Chris gets his word across really well. He told us to treat it like any other away game and try to get three points," Hoolahan said. "Beating Arsenal was great and we hope we can build on that. We hope we can achieve what we did last season or even more and finish as high up the table as possible. We're looking higher. We have a lot of quality in the team and we have played really well in the last two games."
