Man arrested over Kirkland attack

Police have arrested a 21-year-old man on suspicion of assault after Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Chris Kirkland was attacked during the 1-1 draw with Leeds United on Friday night.

Several unsavoury incidents occurred during the match at Hillsborough, with South Yorkshire Police confirming it was also investigating claims that seats and bottles were thrown during the game.

The supporter suspected of attacking Kirkland was arrested in Cheltenham shortly before 1pm on Sunday, Gloucestershire Police confirmed.

A spokesman said: "The investigation is being led by South Yorkshire Police. The man currently remains in police custody."
