Naismith handed two-game ban

ESPN staff

Steven Naismith will miss Scotland's World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Belgium after being found guilty of elbowing Serbia's Srdjan Mijailovic.

The incident, for which Naismith has received a two-match ban, took place during Scotland's goalless qualifying match against the Serbs last month, but was not dealt with at the time by referee Jonas Eriksson, allowing FIFA to open disciplinary proceedings.

After escaping the maximum punishment of three matches, the Everton striker will be available to return for the away game against Serbia in March.

Levein said: "Obviously this is disappointing news but Steven has been very honest and professional throughout the disciplinary process. We named a 25-man squad earlier this week to compensate for any potential suspension, which has now been confirmed, and I am confident we have enough strength in that department to offset the loss of a player who has been in excellent form so far this season."
