Stephan Uersfeld, Germany Correspondent

Hertha Berlin midfielder Anis Ben-Hatira was arrested late on Saturday but released a few hours later, the Bundesliga 2 club have said.

Berlin papers reported that Ben-Hatira, 24, was taken into custody hours after Berlin's 1-1 draw at Kaiserslautern. According to the Berliner Zeitung, the Berlin-born Tunisia international became involved in a row with a woman, believed to be a former girlfriend, in the west of the city. He was detained by police while at a petrol station shortly afterwards.

On Sunday, Hertha confirmed the reports in a press release and said they had been notified about the incident by the player. They said they believed the matter would be resolved in Ben-Hatira's favour.

The player's lawyer, Uwe Freyschmidt, said his client "regretted that this private matter had brought public attention to the club."
