Former Germany midfielder Tim Borowski has announced his retirement from football due to injury.

Borowski, 32, has spent the vast majority of his career with Werder Bremen, joining the club in 1996. He spent the 2008-09 season with Bayern Munich but returned the following summer.

However, he was not offered an extension when his contract expired in the summer as he has been unable to overcome the ankle problems that have plagued him for the last two years. He has now finally decided to call time on a career that saw him earn 33 caps for his country.

"I had a wonderful time as a footballer with many great, emotional moments," Borowski, who won a league and cup double with Werder in 2004, said. "I'll always keep that with me."

He is expected to remain at the Weserstadion in some capacity.

"Werder are my team," he said on the club's official website. "I'm talking to the club, and I think that in around four weeks I'll know what I'm going to do. Until January, though, I will be taking a break and enjoying some time with my family."
