AVB: We were never in talks to sign Klose

Andre Villas-Boas has denied that Tottenham were ever in negotiations to bring Germany international Miroslav Klose to White Hart Lane.

Last week, Klose claimed he turned down an opportunity to join Tottenham in the summer, opting instead to honour his contract with Serie A side Lazio.

Klose, 34 - who is only four goals behind Gerd Muller's Germany record of 68 - suggested Spurs had approached him during the most recent transfer window.

"Tottenham came looking for me, but I signed for Lazio until 2014 and I intend to respect that contract," he told Sportal.it.

But Villas-Boas, who picked up his first Spurs win against Reading at the weekend, said that although he was offered the opportunity to sign the forward there had never been talks about dong a deal.

The Tottenham boss told Gazzetta dello Sport: "The player had been offered to us by the usual round of agents, but there was never any real negotiation.

"Klose is an important player, but I have very good strikers. With Defoe, Adebayor and Dempsey, I can feel comfortable."

Klose is likely to play at White Hart Lane on Thursday night as Lazio travel to London for a Europa League clash, and Villas-Boas said he anticipated a tough evening.

"With Lazio, it will be a difficult match," he said. "The Italian league is one of the toughest in the world, and those at the top of it need to be addressed with the utmost concentration."
