Mensah close to West Ham move

Former Lyon and Sunderland defender John Mensah is reportedly close to joining West Ham United.

Mensah, 29, recently had his contract with Lyon terminated by mutual consent after making just a single domestic appearance last season.

The Ghana international is well versed in English football having spent two seasons on loan in the North East with Sunderland but struggled with injury problems on Wearside, with the club opting against making the deal permanent.

Mensah had been linked to Hull City, which would see a reunion with former Sunderland manager Steve Bruce, while Scottish champions Celtic have also been credited with an interest.

However it now seems that West Ham, who signed 11 new players in the summer, are keen to add Mensah to their squad, with the feeling being mutual according to his agent.

Willie McKay, Mensah's representative, said: "Several clubs want to sign John, but he is keen to join West Ham."
