RVP: I'll play anywhere for Netherlands

ESPN staff

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has said he would be happy to play "anywhere" for new Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal.

Van Persie, 29, scored a hat-trick as United snatched victory against Southampton at the weekend and is targeting success for his country as they kick off their World Cup qualifying campaign.

He could be confined to the substitutes' bench after being overlooked by Van Gaal for the friendly defeat against Belgium last month, in which Klaas Jan Huntelaar started.

And when asked by reporters where he was likely to play, he said: "I'm just available. It does not matter what I think. Those are questions for the coach. I am available for any position.''

He said he had had "a good talk" with Van Gaal and would always be committed to the national team. "I still find it an honour to be here," he told AD Sportwereld. "That will not really change, even if I do not play the next matches.''

Netherlands begin their campaign with a home game against Turkey in Amsterdam on Friday before an away game against Hungary four days later.
