Bundesliga club Mainz have announced the signing of former Bolton Wanderers forward Ivan Klasnic.

Klasnic, 32, who left Bolton after they were relegated from the Premier League on the final day of last season, moves to Mainz on a free transfer.

Mainz, who have scored one goal in their two Bundesliga games so far, had been interested in signing Adrian Ramos from Hertha Berlin on deadline day, but the attempted deal fell through.

The club then turned to Klasnic, who has extensive experience of German football after having played for St Pauli and Werder Bremen.

Mainz director of football Christian Heidel said: "Ivan Klasnic has always been our Plan B and, after the Ramos transfer fell through, we immediately worked on it.

"We were looking for an experienced player who knows the Bundesliga to add to our young attacking department. And we see that someone in Ivan Klasnic, who has shown his qualities, especially his goalscoring qualities, at every club he has been with so far."

Hamburg-born Klasnic, a Croatia international, said he was happy to be back in Germany, adding: "I had several options, but the chance to play for Mainz tempted me the most. It also means I am closer to my daughter, who lives in Hamburg, now."
