Shamrock Rovers face a tough task to progress from their Champions League qualifying second round after they were held to a 0-0 draw by FK Ekranas at Tallaght Stadium on Tuesday.
In a slow-paced encounter in which the visitors were happy to concede ground, Rovers failed to show the necessary imagination to make a breakthrough. Ronan Finn missed arguably the best chance of the opening half, shooting wide when he should have done better.
Finn then hit the bar as Shamrock dominated the second period, before Stephen O'Donnell missed a late chance to win it for the hosts.
Failure to score means the Hoops, for whom hopes were high after they became the first Irish team to reach the Europa League group stages last season, must now get a result in Lithuania next week to progress.
Welsh side The New Saints put up a brave performance to hold Swedish champions Helsingborgs to a goalless draw in their first leg clash in Oswestry.
New signing Chris Jones hit a post as the hosts dominated the game for long periods but were unable to gain an advantage ahead of next Wednesday's return game in Sweden.
