Borussia Monchengladbach coach Lucien Favre has signed a new five-year contract.

Favre, 54, took charge of Gladbach in February 2011 and, after steering the club clear of relegation, secured Champions League football in his first full season.

"Lucien Favre is exactly the right coach for Borussia and we are delighted that we will continue along the path we have been following with him," director of sport Max Eberl said.

Favre, who had spent the entirety of his managerial career in his native Switzerland before beginning a two-year spell with Hertha Berlin in 2007, had been linked with clubs including Bayern Munich and Marseille before committing to the new deal.

Favre said: "I have been holding talks for a long time with the board and the management and I am now pleased with this contract extension and the attractive challenges which lie ahead of us."
